CHLAMYDIA INFECTION

Q: I was just informed from a girl I was with over two months ago that her boyfriend has/had chlamydia. She didn't have symptoms, but when checked she did to.

I realize I guess I need to get checked, but all the reports here say that signs or symptoms can occur prior to one month of interaction with an infected person.

since it's been over two months, should I still call the doctor?

A: Yes, chlamydia infection won't go away ever until treated. If you had unprotected sex with her while she was infected, it is very likely you have it also. Most people are not symptomatic. Most people I see in the office don't know that they have it.

CHLAMYDIA INFECTION

Q: I went to the doctor to check for an STD, was screened and prescribed doxycycline for one week. When I came back for a checkup, the doctor told me that I had chlamydia and instead of checking to see if the STD was cured, prescribed me for another week of doxycycline. Is this necessary without even checking to see if the initial treatment worked?
A: No, you usually cant tell if chlamydia has been cured for atleast two weeks after initiating therapy. Depending on the test, you may get a false positive result if it was checked after only one week. So it is really most useful if you wait awhile before checking for resolution. Also, a two week course of antibiotics is often indicated.

SYPHILIS

Q: I have had syphilis before and it was treated with 100mg doxycycline 3 times daily for 2 weeks. treatment was started after a rash appeared.
That was 3 years ago.
Now i have a sore in the same area as before so i know it is the same thing again. No rash yet.
I started taking 100 mg of doxy 2 times daily.
it has been a week and the sore is still there , but shrinking.
Is the doxy working? How long should it take until the doxy , if working, should cause the sore to dissapate?

A: Penicillin is still the best medication for treatment of syphilis. I imagine you might have a penicillin allergy, which is why doxy was chosen? Doxycycline is used for syphilis. If you are taking the medication as prescribed which sounds like it, then it should be working (unless you are on other medications simultaneously, like seizure medications that decrease the effectiveness of doxy). It works by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria, not by killing the bacteria that is already there. So it can take a few days to kick in. I cannot tell you how long it will take for the sore to go away. Exercise caution, that the sore is still contagious. Just make sure that your infection is being followed by a physician because if improperly treated, there are serious consequences. Best of luck.

SEIZURES

Q: My 11.10 yr old son has been taking Topamax for 1 year to treat either partial seizures or tics. (unsure of diagnosis). Since taking the medication, the movements (head jerking) have completely stopped. Does this mean that his diagnosis would leave towards epilepsy vs a tic disorder? The EEG he had originally was normal.

I was diagnosed as having tics 20 yrs ago but now and questioning my own diagnosis as well. I just am looking for a more concrete dianosis. Does my son have tics or does he have partial seizures since the seizure medicine is working?

HERPES

In the past month or so I've had some bumps and scab like irritations on and around my penis, including my testicles. Could this be a case of herpes?

BUMPS ON THE PENIS

hi i had a question about something that has been goin on on my penis. first of all i am a virgin and never had oral sex either. But i have been masterbating frequently some times with out washing my hands before. Recently i have discovered a few colorless bumps near the middle of my penis no itching or burning. Now one of them is a little bigger and is red with a white head like a pimple. the other are only there when my penis is ereccted. Is this serious or could it just be a rash?

HERPES

I'm writing you out of pure concern and frustration. Recently, withing
the last few days I had oral sex with a young lady. We only had oral
sex. A few days after the oral act took place..she told me that she does
have herpes. She said she got it when she was around 12 years old. She
is now 26 and I'm 27. Of course I was upset with her for not telling
me that before hand. She told me that in her last relationship her
partner never got herpes and the entire time she has had it..she has never
passed it to anyone.

My question is...how at risk am I? she says that she is sure that she
didn't pass it to me because she wasn't having an outbreak and haven't
had an outbreak in a long time. I get tested on a regular basis and
I've never had an STD or anything in the past. I'm natrually concerned. I
want to know is there anything I can do, other than wait for six weeks
and get tested. And how likely is it that from one oral sex act I did
or didnt contract herpes? Thanks.

TRICHOMONAS INFECTION

Q: How long can a man or woman have trichomoniasis without knowing it if they don't have any symptons?
A: Many people do not have symptoms at all. Women may get a vaginitis. I have seen people have it for years without knowing. It is impossible to say.

FIRST INTERCOURSE AND BLEEDING

Q: Why do u bleed for 2 days after u have sex for the first time?

GENITAL HERPES

Q: I have herpes type 2. I very rarely get outbreaks. My doctor gave me a prescription for valtrex, and informed me to take it when i have an outbreak. I have recently met someone thats pretty much amazing and she doesn't have Herpes. I was to keep it that way. I'm going to tell her before we have a sexual relationship but before i do i want to make sure i have my facts straight. I'm really scared she is going to freak out and run away. so i wanna make sure that i know everything i need to know ...

Can i spread herpes type 2 by kissing?

Can i spread Herpes type 2 by giving oral sex... ?(my mouth - her vagina)

If i where a condom and have no sign of an outbreak is it safe for her to perform oral sex? what if i don't where a condom with no outbreak?

If i'm not having an outbreak should i take once a day valtrex just to be safe. I wanna make sure she doesn't get this disease... so is it better to take valtrex all the time even though you might not need it.. (chronic herpes outbreaks) or do i have the same chance of spreading it if i just take the Valtrex when i feel an outbreak might occur?

It is true that the only way i can spread it is either through unprotected sex? or while having an outbreak (open sore... or sore of anykind) if her skin touches an infected area/blister or sore?

Would it be safe if (not having an outbreak of any kind) she touched other areas of my "privates" with her tongue/hand?

Can i still have kids with herpes type 2?

Is there anything wrong with my sperm if i have Herpes?

Do i still have the same chances of getting someone pregnant with this disease?

SPERM AND PRE-CUM

Q: What is your question? Is chances high that a girl can get pregnant from precum when she's ovulating?
A: Yes, precum may contain sperm.

PAIN AFTER SEX

Q: I had sex with my boyfriend two days ago. right after he pulled out of me i felt a tremendous amount of pain in my abdomen and it felt as though i was constipated as well. today (two days later) i woke up and went to the bathroom. i went to the bathroom probably several times and the first 3-4 times i saw blood when i wiped from urinating. the bleeding only came when i urinated and stopped later that day. then my stomach on the left side began to hurt similarly to the way it hurt the night we had sex. but this time it felt as if i had major gas and at times it felt like cramps and the pain went from the front of my stomach on the left side to my back. then it began to hurt a little on my right side later today. what is it? am i pregnant? do i have a urinary infection? gas? or what?

STD RELATED SYMPTOMS OR NOT?

Q: My friend has an infection that he has had for 13 years. The symptoms are sores genital swelling flu like symptoms and fatigue. It reoccurs and hasn't responded to antibiotics. The closest diagnosis has been staph and strepp. He has been ruled out for all STDs. Could it be erysipelas?

Bumps on the penis

Q: I have about ten bumps that are skin colored at the base of my penis and i was
wanting to know if they are hpv?
A: Hpv stands for 'human papilloma virus' which is a virus. There are many different strains of the virus, some of which cause genital warts and others that cause cervical cancer. It is not known if hpv can cause penile cancer in men. Anyway, it is possible to have warts, herpes(the bumps or ulcers will burn with herpes) or irritation that may look like bumps on the penis.

Masturbation

Q: Does masturbation have any negative
impact on my being?
A: No, masturbation is considered a healthy part of life.

Loss of Sexual Desire

Q: My husband is almost 45 and I will be 41 this August and
we have been married 1 year and together 4 years. Although I have been dxd with
bi-polar, I don't feel that I have a higher than average desire for sex. I would
be happy with 2 days per week, where as my husband is happy with 2 or less times
per month. He wasn't like this when we first moved in together, but after 6
months and I gained from 119 to about 140 lbs, he slacked off. He tells me he
loves me very much, but he has also told me; when pressed, that he is not
sexually attracted to me or find me pretty. He says he has always been attracted
to my intelligence. Alot of other men have commented that they find me extremely
attractive, without peaking my interest whatsoever. My husband's ex-wife says he
was the same with her, and she ended up leaving him for another man. Am I being
too sensitive or does my husband have an obvious problem in the bedroom
department, or depression? He says he isn't depressed. BTW, he hasn't seen a Dr. since he was very young.

A: There are many reasons for a loss in sexual desire of your partner. If he had this problem with his previous wife, than the issue is probably not you. A decreased libido in this age group is common in men. Some reasons for a decreased libido in men are decreased testosterone level, sleep apnea, depression, anxiety, medicines like antihypertensives and certain antidepressants (ssri's) etc. If his lack of a strong libido bothers him, he should see a physician. First, a good history should be obtained and organic problems should ruled out (i.e., check testosterone level, etc.). If there is no apparent reason for his loss of sexual drive, a psychiatric consultation may be useful. Best of luck-
